As your water, wastewater and municipal power provider, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is committed to being a good environmental citizen to our customers and their communities. We acknowledge our responsibility to help safeguard natural resources and the environment for future generations, and we continue our mission to serve San Francisco and its Bay Area customers with reliable, high quality and affordable water, while maximizing benefits from power operations and responsibly managing our waste.
San Francisco residents are fortunate to enjoy a reliable and high quality water supply from the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The SFPUC, the third largest municipal utility in California, serves 2.4 million residential, commercial, and industrial customers in the Bay Area. Approximately one-third of water delivered goes to retail customers in San Francisco, while the other two-thirds of the water is delivered to 28 wholesale suburban agencies found in Alameda, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.
Water plays a critical role in our environmental, social and economic well being. San Francisco has one of the purest water sources in the nation, yet the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) faces a crucial question: Will there be enough water to satisfy future demand?
